Confessions of a Shopaholic (not me, of cos!)

Watched "Confessions of a Shopaholic" with my sister. I have only one phrase to describe my feelings after watching the show - I came to my senses. The moment I stepped out of the cinema, I felt repulsed by the thought of shopping. I think it would good wake up call for those who have trouble controlling their spending and those who have a tendency to shop impulsively.
In the show (the storyline is quite different from the novel), Rebecca's (played by Isla Fisher) motivation to keep working was to finance her shopping. On the surface, Rebecca lives a flashy lifestyle and dresses well but underneath all that, she is sitting on a whole lot of debts. A debt collector, Derek Smeath, is haunting her and tracking her down. Everytime he calls her to meet her up to schedule a meeting to work out a payment plan for her, she makes up all kinds of excuses like having to take care of her sick aunt or attending to home renovations, etc just to avoid him. So much so that when he called on her at her new work place, she lied to her colleagues that Derek is a possessive ex-boyfriend who stalks her so that they wouldn't know about her debts. When all her colleagues and boss (Luke Brandon) bought her story of Derek, they called in Security to chase him out of the building.
Rebecca is an advice columnist at Successful Savings, writing pieces on managing personal finances and the danger of using credit cards (which is totally ironic!). Readers are able to relate to her articles and they love her analogies as she uses her life examples since she has plenty of firsthand experience with credit cards and personal debts. She becomes famous and her boss is impressed with her writing and brings her along with him to a conference where people working in their industry are waiting to meet her. That's when Luke & Rebecca realised that they have feelings for each other but Rebecca is devastated when Luke has already agreed to bring another lady to a gala dinner as his partner.
During that time, Rebecca was going through group counselling designed to help cure shopaholics. Rebecca was scheduled to appear on a live breakfast show on TV and a consultant from her office went to get her a new outfit for the TV appearance. She bought the new outfit and her bride's maid dress (for her best friend's wedding) to the counselling session, where her therapist mistaken that the dresses were a result of her lack of self-control. In order to set an example to the rest of the shopaholics, her therapist took the dresses and donated them to a thrift shop. After the counselling, Rebecca ran back to the thrift shop to buy the dresses back, but she only had enough money to buy one dress. So would it be the branded outfit for the TV appearance or the bride's maid dress for her best friend's wedding? Of course, she would pick the branded outfit, if not there wouldn't be anymore show to watch. When her best friend found out that she lost the bride's maid dress, Rebecca lost her best friend as well.
In the meantime, Derek is still trying desperately to reach Rebecca. So when Rebecca appeared on the live TV show in her branded outfit with Luke, Derek attended the show as an audience. When the time for the "Q & A" session came, he stood up and announced his name which Luke recognised as Rebecca's stalker and shouts for security. This is when Derek reveals that Rebecca has been lying and has in fact been avoiding payment. Oops! Bubble's burst.. Luke is hurt and loses trust in Rebecca, Rebecca leaves the firm.
Her fellow shopaholics from the counselling group decided to help her settle her debts, by organising a Sale & Auction to sell off all her branded purchases. The money earned was more than enough to pay off her debts and it turns out that Luke bought one of her most prized possessions - a green scarf, and he gave it back to her as a gift. So they got back together.. Next on the list to win back is Rebecca's best friend. She managed to get the bride's maid dress back, puts it on and turned up at the church where her best friend's wedding is held. Her friend forgives her and they lived happily ever after... The End..
Things change, so do we. We grow up.
